Where it began

Our History

Founded in 1972, Cavendish and Gloucester started as an entrepreneurial dream and has now expanded to a company that employs over 25 staff with 2 regions and head offices in London and Hampshire.

The story of how Cavendish and Gloucester came to be the company it is today, starts with the history of Peter Murphy. In the Early 1970s Peter had made the move down from Southport to London to work in a district valuer’s office for the Inland Revenue. From there he changed jobs thanks to a kind employer in a local authority and began to see for himself the workings of the property market and the way ahead for a business venture. His first step into property was buying a house in Finchley to convert into flats and sell.

He soon had enough capital to proceed with the help of a local estate agent with whom he had become friendly with, and their first purchases were on a 50-50 split basis. He was able to borrow money and at the time had no real concept of how a business should work and how it would succeed in the future. Now with nearly 50 years in the business C and G have become specialist’s in the property field, with operations spanning the entirety of London, the Home Counties and beyond.

Cavendish & Gloucester have developed every type of property from Henry’s VIII’s Netley Castle in Southampton, The Wintles a community of houses in Shropshire centred around sustainability, affordable housing to help those whose needs are not met by the market get on the property ladder, and much more. Everything built from, penthouses, barn conversions to affordable housing, is done with the same level of quality craftsmanship, specification and finish throughout.

Cavendish & Gloucester are not a development company that can be pigeonholed in what they build, their interest in properties is varied and vast and they do not shy away from a challenge. The Cavendish & Gloucester of today is still spearheaded by Peter Murphy the Chairman and managing director with his well-established team that combines youthful enthusiasm with a strong core of experience. Their efficient operation is dedicated to maintaining and improving business on a day-to-day basis.
